Todd HermansonI am pleased to introduce myself to you. I have been at Tigard High School since 1998, following four years in the Portland School District and numerous years teaching after school classes, and after working as an actor for about 10 years. In fact, when my schedule permits I still do plays and musicals.
As a theatre teacher I have certain philosophies honed from my work as an actor, my own work as a student, and the many years I have spent teaching in the class room. I believe my first job is to help bring out the good people that are inherent in each student. This is done in quite a few ways: |
*A deadline is a deadline. Late assignments are graded down.
*Teamwork is mandatory in theatre and most other areas of life. Students are assigned to work with other students they may not know, or gotten along with in the past. Part of their responsibility is to make the group dynamics work and be in attendance.
*Students are expected to be respectful of each other, the place, and themselves. This includes proper audience behavior and participating in activities.
*My job is not to ensure the students have fun (teenagers find a way to have fun) but to work consistently and well; develop an appreciation of the theatre by attending performances and critiquing what they have seen.
*Finally, students are graded on the process of creation, not necessarily the final performance. But, usually the students work ethic will be reflected in their final product.
*My favorite saying is "Don't let fear get in your way of achieving your best." Risks on stage give students confidence because they are performing in a supportive environment.
If you have questions about your student, or wish to speak to me about other matters, Email is the best way to correspond with me.
Thank you for allowing me to teach your child and, I hope, after spending time in my program they become better people.
